Rug Size Guide

Find the Perfect Fit for Every Room

Choosing the right rug size is just as important as choosing the right design. The rug’s presence, more than any other element, can shape how your space feels. A well-sized rug can anchor your space, create harmony, and make your home feel thoughtfully put together. Here’s our simple, room-by-room guide to help you find your ideal fit.

Here are a few rules of thumb to keep in mind

Let your rug embrace your furniture

Sofas, beds, or dining tables should feel ‘held’ by the rug, not teetering off the edge.

Mirror shapes where you can.

A round dining table feels most balanced on a round or square rug, while a rectangular table is best on an oblong rug.

Leave breathing room.

Aim for 8’’ to 16’’ (20–40 cm) between the edge of your rug and the wall to maintain balance.

Scale with the space.

Small rooms work with small rugs-but large rooms demand something more generous.

When in Doubt, Oversize

A larger rug almost always looks better than one that’s too small.

Anchor by furniture, not just space

Your rug’s size should reflect the furniture that lives on it – especially beds, tables, and seating groups.

BEDROOM

When choosing a rug for the bedroom, it’s all about balance and proportion. In a larger space, you might go for a generously sized rug that acts as a foundation and extends well beyond the bed. But it’s also helpful to think in thirds, and remember that rugs often look best when they’re sized in proportion to the width of the bed.

In smaller rooms, the size of the rug should also take into account the overall layout and nearby furniture, not just the bed itself. Stylists often recommend using a rug that extends 24 to 28 inches (60 to 70 cm) on each side of the bed, either including or excluding the nightstands.

Another great option? Two smaller rugs or runners, one on each side. This setup keeps your feet warm in the morning and gives the bed a grounded, well-framed look. Just avoid rugs that disappear completely under the bed or barely peek out – they tend to feel out of place.

LIVING ROOM

The best way to choose the right rug size for your living room is to start with the layout you already have. A rug that’s at least as long as your sofa will help define the space-it’s hard for a rug to ground a room if it’s too small.

Ideally, all your seating should fit on the rug with a few extra inches of space around the edges. If that’s not possible, placing just the front legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug works well too, as long as you keep it consistent across the seating area.

DINING ROOM

When choosing a rug for the bedroom, it’s all about balance and proportion. In a larger space, you might go for a generously sized rug that acts as a foundation and extends well beyond the bed. But it’s also helpful to think in thirds – and remember that rugs often look best when they’re sized in proportion to the width of the bed.

In smaller rooms, the size of the rug should also take into account the overall layout and nearby furniture, not just the bed itself. Stylists often re-commend using a rug that extends 24 to 28 inches (60 to 70 cm) on each side of the bed—either including or excluding the nightstands. Another great option? Two smaller rugs or runners, one on each side. This setup keeps your feet warm in the morning and gives the bed a grounded, well-framed look. Just avoid rugs that disappear completely under the bed or barely peek out – they tend to feel out of place.

HALLWAYS

Hallways see a lot of foot traffic, so it’s best to choose a rug that’s durable and easy to maintain. Since these spaces are often narrow and filled with doorways, a long, low-profile runner works well, it won’t get in the way or trap too much dirt. A good rule is to leave about 18 inches of visible floor between the rug and the wall, though in smaller spaces, a bit less can still look balanced.

OFFICE

When choosing a rug for your home office, start with the layout of the room. You’ll want enough space for your desk and chair, plus extra room so your chair can move freely without slipping off the rug. In larger setups, you can position the rug under the front legs of your desk, leaving the back legs and chair on the bare floor, or place the entire setup on the rug for a more unified look.

Go for a low-pile rug, it makes rolling your chair easier and holds up well to daily wear. And whether you’re adding lounge chairs or not, aim to leave about 18 inches (around 45 cm) of visible floor space between the rug and the walls to keep the room feeling open and balanced.

Bedroom

The key here is making sure there’s enough rug space on each side of your bed—we suggest leaving at least 3 to 4 feet for extra comfort.

Twin bed

Twin Bed with a 5’x8’ Rug
You can place a 4’x6’ or 5’x8’ rug under the lower two-thirds of your twinbed, leaving your nightstands off the rug. This way, you’ll still have plenty of cozy rug space around the bed to comfortably step onto each morning.

Twin Bed with a 6’x9’ Rug
If you’d like more rug space at the foot of your bed, a 6’x9’ rug is perfect—it nicely anchors your furniture and feels balanced.
